Todd Haynes' Bob Dylan movie

Great article in today's NYT magazine about writer/director Todd Haynes and the making of his upcoming "I'm Not There," which is a biopic about Bob Dylan that employs multiple characters representing Dylan at different times in his life. Haynes is a real maverick, independent filmmaker. He lives in an Arts and Crafts abode in Portland, OR, surrounded by friends and the low-key hipster, artsy environs that make the city one of my favorite places in America. He fights for his art -- the article details the pains he experienced while making/editing "Velvet Goldmine," a 90s independent film about the glam rock 70s inspired by David Bowie. I enjoyed reading about the relationship he still maintains with Harvey Weinstein -- it exemplifies Weinstein's desire to make and market bold films, and how his business sense ("This movie needs to be shorter") manifests itself in the actual final cut that the filmmaker delivers.

Btw, Haynes is a Brown grad and I interviewed him at Brown in '03/'04 (can't remember when exactly, it was an interesting interview!). He majored in Arts/Semiotics and it shows :)
